The secret to perfectly spreadable, fresh and creamy butter is pairing your Thermomix® with the ceramic butter bell crock – a centuries-old method from the nation that loves their butter and fresh-baked bread as much as we Aussies do.
Well before the age of refrigeration, the French solved the problem of ‘How to store butter at room temperature and ‘how to keep butter soft’ by inventing the clever butter crock with a water seal. It preserves all the creamy texture and fresh delicate flavour of your homemade all-natural butter (or your favourite store-bought brand) for up to 30 days and makes a gorgeous addition to your tableware collection.
Here’s how to keep butter soft and ready to spread, anytime:
While reflecting the outside heat, the crock insulates and cools your butter. For best results, keep the ceramic butter bell crock away from heat sources and direct sunlight, as this may cause your butter to melt and fall into the water.
We also recommend using a flat knife to scrape butter evenly out of the ceramic butter bowl crock. Removing it in chunks can cause the butter to slip out of the bowl.
When you’ve taken your final scoops, and you’re ready to make another fresh batch in your Thermomix, both parts of the ceramic butter bell crock can go straight in the dishwasher for easy cleaning.

Firmly press your room temperature homemade or store bought butter into the clean and dry lid of the butter bowl (the back of a spoon is handy for pressing it in). You'll then need to add water (about 1/3 of a cup) to the base of the butter bowl before inverting the lid. This will create a vacuum seal preventing oxygen from accessing the butter which is the secret to maintaining it's freshness and spreadability for weeks at a time.
We do suggest you change the water every 2-3 days and if you're in a warmer environment (above 27 °C degrees inside) we'd recommend storing your filled butter bowl in the fridge. Otherwise it will slide out and land in the water!
If using homemade butter, make sure it is churned well until the liquid is clear and rinse 2-3 times. Squeeze out as much liquid as possible before putting in your butter bowl.
